Planned Parenthood Opens New Clinic In San Francisco

Planned Parenthood has opened up a new center on Valencia Street in San Francisco following months of reduced access to reproductive health services for women living in the area, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

In early September 2010, Planned Parenthood Federation of America dissolved its affiliation with Golden Gate Community Health -- formerly Golden Gate Planned Parenthood -- due to financial issues. Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific in Concord took over the Golden Gate's former territories of San Francisco, Marin, Mendocino and Sonoma.

Additionally, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte in San Jose assumed the rest of the areas formerly held by Golden Gate -- Alameda and San Mateo counties. Golden Gate reorganized under the Community Health name and kept its San Francisco center open but closed another clinic.

The Valencia Street center is now open part time until it receives its full-time license. The Chronicle reports that neither the San Francisco nor a Santa Rosa clinic that PPSP opened in November currently offer abortion care. However, both clinics hope to begin offering such services next month.

According to the Chronicle, women's health services are greatly needed in areas like Sonoma and Mendocino counties because of dramatically reduced county medical services (Colliver, San Francisco Chronicle, 1/19).
